Murder investigation launched after Winton man stabbed trying to break up fight


Police have launched a murder investigation after a man sadly died after being stabbed in Winton last night.

It’s understood the 26-year-old intervened to break up a fight on Cambrai Crescent late on Monday evening and suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital where he tragically passed away.

Police have not identified the victim but family have been informed and he is known locally.

Update: The victim has been named locally as 26-year-old father of two Wesley Barnard.

A 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Tuesday morning forensics teams cordoned off Cambrai Crescent, posting yellow markers in the road as they gather clues to what happened last night.

Police have also erected a cordon around one property on Cambrai Crescent.

One resident, named Beverley, said that she heard a commotion on the street on Monday night but thought it was “just the normal Bank Holiday”, she added: “But then I heard the sirens and saw the flashing lights and I knew something was up.

“It is a tight-knit community here although I do feel very worried after dark.”

Officers were scrambled to Winton at 11.40pm on Monday 29 August after reports of a disturbance and a fight on Cambrai Crescent.

Extra police have been drafted in to patrol the scene and are appealing directly for anyone on the Winton estate around Cambrai Crescent or Edgeware Road who witnessed the fight to get in touch as soon as possible.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 11.40pm on Monday 29 August 2016 police were called to a report of fighting on Cambrai Street in Winton, Eccles.

“Police and Ambulance services attended and found a 26 year-old man had been stabbed and was in a serious condition.

“He was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital where sadly he later died.

“Police have now launched a murder investigation and a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of murder.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson, Head of Crime at GMP said: “This is a terrible incident where a young man has lost his life. My thoughts are with his family at this extremely difficult time.

“We believe there will be lots of witnesses to this incident.

“I appeal to anyone who saw what happened and anyone who saw the events before or after it to contact police.
