Solicitors waive fees to help The Christie

Where there’s a Will there’s a way to help The Christie

People in the north west will have the opportunity to make or update their will for no fee next month as part of The Christie’s Make a Will Week, in return for a donation to the charity.

The Christie, the north west’s specialist cancer centre, is encouraging people to make a will, with the support of more than 40 law firms across the region.

During The Christie charity’s Make a Will Week, from 12-16 September 2016, participating solicitors will help people make or update a will for free, when usually it can cost anything up to £150 for a basic will, or more for more complicated arrangements.

Last year alone, The Christie received £7.5m from gifts left in wills.

Caroline Harrington, private client solicitor at Furness Evans Solicitors in Cadishead, one of the participating firms, said: “Furness Evans loves to support local charities and The Christie is a cause which has touched the whole of Manchester and the North West.

“We’re very pleased to be returning to Make a Will Week for the fourth year running.”

Phil Taylor, head of private clients at Farleys Solicitors in Manchester city centre added: “The Christie is an incredible place, doing amazing work for patients and their families and we are delighted to participate in Make a Will Week 2016.

“It’s a great opportunity for our team to come together in support of a wonderful cause and use our skills to raise much needed funds.”

Gary Kelly, legacy and research manager at The Christie charity said: “It’s never too early to make a will and as life changes with getting married, having children, buying a house or retiring it often needs updating. Leaving a gift in your will, however big or small, to a cause close to the heart, makes a huge difference to charities. And it’s easier than you think through The Christie charity’s Make a Will Week.

“Make a Will Week is now in its seventh year and is firmly established in The Christie charity’s calendar. The money raised makes a huge difference to our patients, helping to fund research, treatment and extra support services. More than 40 solicitors are kindly taking part in this year’s Make a Will Week and we’re extremely grateful to them for giving up their time and money for this important cause.”

To get involved visit www.christiewillweek.org for a list of participating solicitors or you can contact The Christie charity on 0161 918 7424 or email legacy@christies.org. The suggested minimum donation is £90 for a basic single will, £135 for a pair of basic ‘mirror wills’ which are ideal for couples, or £40 to update an existing will.

Solicitors will offer a free, standard will writing and updating service, and in return encourage donations to The Christie charity.

The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust through its fundraising activities, and delivers projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS funds. The charity has over 43,000 supporters who helped raise £15.9m last year.
