Barton Players take to the streets for new production

Barton Theatre Company are performing at Eccles Festival again this year – but with a difference.

In previous years, Barton’s Festival performances have been outdoors on the streets of Eccles but this time their performance really is, ‘Up Your Street’

This year’s production, ‘Up Your Street’ is made up of six short pieces, written by Elaine McCann and Joan Breen – both members of the company – and is described by director, Marit Schep, as:

“A theatrical rollercoaster ride, in words and song, through almost two centuries of life in Eccles
starting in the mid 19th century at the famous – or maybe infamous – Eccles Wakes, we move via the time of King Cotton and the mills, through the first and second world wars, to the hunger strikes of the thirties, the suffragettes and their modern day sisters – and come right up to date in a Beauty Salon ‘somewhere in Eccles and all this in 50 minutes!”

You can see ‘ Up Your Street’ at The Roundabout, a travelling theatre to be built by the side of the Parish Church, hosting plays, music, dance, exhibitions etc during the four days of the festival

The theatre comes to Eccles in partnership with the Lowry and Paines Plough touring theatre company.

Barton’s performance of ‘Up Your Street’ is at 6pm on Saturday 10th September and tickets are £2.

You can book by ringing The Lowry 0843 208 6010 (no booking fee ), emailing Barton Theatre Company on bartontheatrecompnay@gmail.comm or by contacting Elaine on 0161 707 5941

Weather permitting, Barton are hoping to keep up with tradition and stage an outdoor performance of the play on Sunday 11th September at 3.30pm by Smiths Restaurant and the Railway Station.

There’ll be no admission fee for this performance, but audience donations are welcome, simply ‘pay what you can ‘

Writer, Joan Breen told us, “We can’t let an Eccles Festival go by without performing outdoors at least once, so we’re keeping an eye on the weather forecast …… and our fingers crossed !”
