Updated: Armed police called to Clifton after woman, 65, shot in the leg

Armed police were called to Clifton in Salford on Friday evening after reports of a woman being shot.

Residents posted reports of tactical aid units swarming around the Billy Lane/Rake Lane area of Clifton from rush-hour until around 8pm.

A house at the corner of the two streets was cordoned off by police.

A 65-year-old woman was shot in the leg, police confirmed to SalfordOnline.com tonight.

A spokesman for the force said that the victim had suffered a number of pellet wounds.

The firearm used has not been confirmed by officers, but locals suggest a shotgun had been used.

An earlier version of this article suggested an airgun may have been the weapon used.

This does not now appear to be correct.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment but is not considered to be in a life-threatening condition.

In a statement, the spokesman said: “At around 5.20pm on Friday 2 September 2016, police were called to Billy Lane, Clifton, to reports of a shooting.

“Officers attended and found that a 65-year-old woman had suffered pellet wounds to the leg and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.”
