Updated: Thieves attack cash van guard with sword and machete before burning out getaway car in Lower Broughton


Today in Lower Broughton four men attacked a cash-in-transit security guard with a sword and a machete before fleeing in a black Peugeot found burned out nearby.

Just before 1pm on Wednesday 7 September the four thieves targeted the cash van on Bury New Road near the Tru Trading clothing store.

They stole the cash box but its smoke dye alarm was activated and they dumped the box on a nearby street.

As the security guard tried to escape on foot they chased him down in their car before jumping out and trying to slice him with the sword.

He was not reported to be seriously injured but was extremely traumatised.

The weapon was later recovered by officers with dog units.

The van and the crime scene were taped off on Bury New Road while police conducted their first investigation.

Greater Manchester Police were not immediately available for comment when SalfordOnline.com published details on Wednesday afternoon.

A black Peugeot 308 thought to be a getaway vehicle was dumped on Bramley Street, behind Bury New Road, where the offenders set it on fire.

Police have launched an investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1008 of 07/09/16 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
