Ordsall to host free Olympic sports festival this weekend

A community group in Ordsall will capitalise on the Olympic and Paralympic spirit this weekend when they host a sports and community festival this Saturday.

Ordsall Community Café on Tatton Street are inviting adults and children from all over Salford to come and try out new sporting activities.

There’ll be a climbing wall, face-painting, a basketball competition, an inflatable sumo wrestling ring, beginner Zumba classes and it all ends with a massive game of rounders on Regent Square park.

There’s also a special Under 10s zone with giant games including Jenga and Connect 4 and a mums and babies yoga session.

Cafe Project Manager Debbie Butler said: “There’s loads going on for the whole family, and we wanted to celebrate Team GB success by inspiring the next generation to get active and give some exercise or sport a go.

“There’ll be everything from a climbing wall for the older ones to a bouncy castle – all for free on the day.

“We’ll be giving out prizes to those taking part, as well as winners of our challenges throughout the day. We’ve got official Team GB prizes to give out, and the café will be doing deals on food all day.”

The event is funded by Salford CCG’s Partnership and Improvement fund and helping to run it are young parents’ social enterprise Visit from the Stork.

Director Kimberly Bond, said: “This is going to be a great event, with something for everyone including pregnant ladies and those who have just welcomed a new baby into their family.

“We’ll be welcoming the local Sling Swing group of babywearing, dancing mummies to come a give a demo class and we invite Salford and Manchester mums to come and find out more about babwearing and gentle exercise whilst they are here.

“Dads won’t be left out either, with parent races among the more traditional ‘sports day’ games on the day, as well as Adult Sumo Wrestling and a basketball challenge.

The free festival runs from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 10 September.
