Police appeal after city centre rape

Police investigating a rape in Manchester City Centre have released more details in an appeal for information.

At around 2.50am on Wednesday 21 September 2016 police received a report that an 18-year-old woman was raped on Major Street, Manchester City Centre.

Further enquiries have established that the woman was approached and thrown to the ground by a man before he and a woman held the victim down whilst a second woman robbed her.

Following the robbery, the man raped the woman before the three offenders ran away in the direction of The Village.

The first woman, who assisted in restraining the victim during the robbery, is described as approximately 18-years-old, mixed race, scrawny build and had her hair tied up in a ponytail. She spoke with a local accent.

The second woman, who committed the robbery, is described as mixed race, in her early 20’s and had her hair in a messy ponytail. She spoke with a local accent.

The man is described as white, in his early 20’s, slim build and a clean shaven face. He was wearing sports clothing.

Detectives leading the investigation are now asking that anyone who may have seen a group matching the description of the offenders before or after the rape took place to contact police.

The time period for this would be between approximately 2am and 3am.

Detective Inspector Dave Moores of GMP’s Serious Sexual Offences Unit said: “This was a horrendous attack on a young woman which has, understandably, left her extremely distressed.

“We are providing her with support from specially trained officers and have launched a full investigation.

“I would urge anybody who recognises the description of these three and thinks they may have seen them in the city centre area between 2am and 3am to please contact police immediately.”

Anybody with information should contact police on 0161 856 1911 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
