Records tumble as Swinton Lions demolish Oxford 96-4

Swinton Lions put Oxford to the sword in the Hertfordshire sunshine with a complete demolition of the southern side.

The 100-point match saw Swinton winger Ian Mort ink his name in the record books, superceding Chris Atkin for the most points ever scored in one match with his five-try, 48-point haul.

And Mort’s 14 goals out of 17 attempts also topped another Swinton record.

In the first half minutes Swinton ran rampant with tries from Ben White, Richie Hawkyard, Mort himself, Rob Lever, Chris Atkin and Darren Hawkyard putting the Lions 52-0 up at the break.

But there was no silver lining for Oxford as Swinton pushed on to a record score.

Atkin sent Connor Dwyer over on the left, Mort then equalled the points in a match record with a try in the corner and two more quick tries followed when Chris Rothwell and Andy Ackers crossed. Mort and Atkin then both made good breaks to score.

Oxford finally hit back when Adam Withington scored by the posts but Sean Morris missed the simple conversion.

But the Lions weren’t finished, coming on strong in the final five minutes for two more scores from with Mike Morrison and Shaun Robinson.

Lions Coach John Duffy was very pleased with his side’s performance at the end of the game and praised his team for their efforts on the field.
