Armed men steal thousands in Salford cash van robbery

Two masked men armed with a baseball bat and a sledgehammer stole thousands of pounds after attacking a cash-in-transit van in Salford.

At around 10.40am this morning, Thursday 16 July, a security guard was leaving a store, understood to be B&M Bargains on Basten Drive, off Great Cheetham Street East in Higher Broughton, when two men walked up and threatened the man with violence.

Fearing for his life the security guard threw the cash box to the ground and ran back inside the shop.

He was not hurt in the incident but was left extremely shaken.

The two thieves, who were wearing balaclavas and dark clothing, took off on foot in the direction of Rigby Street.

Police cordoned off an area of the street for around two hours while they conducted their enquiries.

A spokesperson for the force told SalfordOnline.com a four-figure sum had been stolen.

No arrests have yet been made.

[Update:] New descriptions issued of the two armed men – police urge anyone with information to call 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
