Evictions ordered as travellers return to Walkden

Local residents living close to Blackleach Country Park in Walkden were up in arms last night, Thursday 6 August, as travellers returned to pitch up their caravans on a grassed area off Bolton Road.

It’s the second time in a month that caravans have parked illegally on the patch of grass on Hill Top Road, near the entrance to the country park.

The caravans, some 40-50 in total, are parked there illegally and residents are worried that when they are moved on they will leave behind rubbish and detritus which can soon turn into a health hazard.

Salford City Council has been forced to issue another eviction order today, Friday 7 August.

On Sunday 13 July scores of wagons and cars drove onto the same grassed area, staying for around 24 hours before eviction orders were put in place.

After the last eviction, the travellers moved on to St Mary’s Park in Walkden, some 500 yards north of the site.

Residents criticised the council for failing to implement measures to stop the travellers returning.

One local, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “They have known about this for a long time and still they’ve done nothing. They could put large rocks around the area so cars can’t drive onto it like has been done on Mosley Common.”

A spokesperson for Salford Council told SalfordOnline.com this morning: “Urban Vision have been contacted and are working on plans to evict the travellers from the site today.”
