4* Review: West Side Story – Palace Theatre, Manchester

West Side Story opened at the Palace Theatre to a very appreciative audience.

This musical masterpiece tells the story of a gangland take on Romeo and Juliet. It’s 1955 Manhatten and a turf war is erupting between two rival teenage street gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and Caucasian Jets.

Star-crossed lovers Tony, former member of the Jets and Maria, sister of Shark leader Bernado find themselves caught up in the middle of all the turmoil.

This youthful energetic cast perform Bernstien’s score of ever popular songs including “I Feel Pretty”, “Somewhere” and “Maria” with a huge amount of conviction.

It is clear to see that the whole cast love being on stage.

Rachel Catterall’s supporting choreography is superb and well thought-out, adding exciting dances and beautiful storytelling through movement.

The moving dream scene was particularly well-executed and the choir situated in the boxes I felt was a wonderful touch.

The main roles are well cast: Rebecca Bolton (Maria) and Sam Berrie (Tony) are convincing as the young couple who decide to run away together.

Sebastian Groves (Bernado) and Isabella Dawson (Anita) also seem to have the chemisty as the fiesty Puerto Rican couple. Jordan Pendleton (A-Rab) deserves a special mention he was hilarious in the “Gee, Officer Krupke” number.

This Palace Theatre Stage Experience production of West Side Story is fresh and exciting. Performed by a young professional cast I urge you to catch it if you can before it ends on Saturday 15 August.
