35 firefighters tackle early morning Salford flat blaze

Over 30 firefighters were sent to tackle a blaze at a block of flats in Salford this morning.

Six fire crews were sent to a four-storey Victorian block on Eccles Old Road at around 4.05am today, Wedensday 19 August, after multiple reports from the public.

It’s thought the fire broke out in the basement of the flats, which are being renovated.

There are no reports of any injuries.

The block is believed to have been empty at the time the fire broke out.

Station Manager Mark Threader, who was in charge of the incident, said: “Crew members have tackled a fire involving the basement of a Victorian building which has caused some fire damage to the first-floor and smoke damage throughout the building.

“The incident was scaled down about an hour or so in and the most likely cause of the fire is electrical.”

Crews wearing breathing apparatus brought the blaze under control using hose reels, and made the area safe.
