Swinton’s 42-6 win takes shine off All Golds

Swinton Lions’ good run of form continued with a victory over a well-drilled All Golds side at Park Lane on Sunday.

The Lions took the lead in the third minute when Stuart Littler finished off a good move in the right corner after pressure from a penalty.

The All Golds restart looked good as they forced the Lions to knock on in their own 20 in wet and slippery conditions, but from the scrum the chance left them as Lee Mapals also knocked on at the first tackle.

Jordan James added the Lions’ second try in the eighth minute when he strode through tackles to score by the posts.

Ben White added a third try midway through the first half when his half-back partner Atkin broke free and White was in support to score.

As Atkin converted his second kick of the afternoon the Lions were starting to pull away.

All Golds second row man Lewis Reece was sent to the sin bin 10 minutes from the break for a high tackle on Rhodri Lloyd and from the resulting penalty the Lions quickly moved up field.

It was Lloyd himself who scored the next try on the left and again Atkin added the goal points.

The visitors then had a rare attack on the Lions line but substitute Jamie Murphy knocked on 10 metres from the line.

Two minutes later the Lions rubbed salt into the wound when young Harry Aaronson broke down the left to send Grant Beecham on a long run to score in the left corner.

The Lions soon increased their lead six minutes into the second half when Beecham made a good break down the left before handing the ball on to the supporting Mike Butt and he raced away to score under the posts.

All Golds could not get any rhythm going but had a chance through centre Yann Bertrand, who was held up by some good Lions defence.

Aaronson added the sixth Lions try on 57 minutes when he latched onto a Rhodri Lloyd kick to score on the left.

All Golds finally hit back on 66 minutes when the impressive Ryan Pywell made a break down the left and Yvan Leroyer scored by the posts, with Matt Bradley adding the conversion.

Hooker Andy Ackers scored the final Lions try 12 minutes from the end when he went over from close range and Atkin converted.

Bradley kicked a nice 40-20 for All Golds five minutes from time but the Lions defence held them out for a 42-6 win and were still attacking right up until the last minute.

After the game John Duffy was pleased with the performance as his side shook off an early-season wobble.

“The first half performance laid the platform for another good victory – despite the conditions we tried our moves which paid off against a well-coached team. We just need to keep playing the way we are.”
