Salford Research Week to shine spotlight on better NHS care

Health researchers are taking to the road for the second annual Salford Research Week in September.

It will celebrate how clinical trials and research help to improve treatments and healthcare for patients and the wider community.

Thousands of people in Salford take part in studies within the NHS each year, to improve care for serious and complex long-term conditions such as diabetes, dementia, and stroke.

The special week, from 5-11 September, will give more information about what sort of research is taking place, how it helps to improve the NHS and how you can get involved.

Research staff will be at Love Eccles Festival on Saturday 5 September (10am-4pm) when the Citizen Scientist team will explain how this ground-breaking project provides people in the city with information about research that could be relevant to them.

It links healthy volunteers as well as patients with studies that are going on.

Patients and visitors at Salford Royal will also have the chance to meet research staff, find out about some of the different studies and share their views, in Hope Building (near Marks & Spencer) on Tuesday 8 September (11am-1pm)

Then on Wednesday 9 September (10.30am-2.30pm), there will be several stalls in Salford Shopping Centre in Pendleton, all focused on research and how you can get involved.

The events have been organised by Salford Research and Development (Salford R+D), an integrated service overseeing research and development on behalf of Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group.

Salford Royal’s Medical Director Dr Chris Brookes said: “Research is absolutely crucial to the NHS and helps us to improve treatments and patient care. We are really proud that so much world-leading research takes place in Salford and I hope that local people will take this chance to come along and find out more.”

Director of Salford R+D Professor Bill Ollier said: “Research and innovation are hugely important to our ambition to make Salford one of the healthiest places to live and one of the safest and best places to receive medical care. This is a chance to find out more and to hear about some of the ways you could be involved.”
