Newly appointed peers caught up in the MP expenses scandal


Forty-five former MPs have been appointed to the House of Lords, but only 24 passed The Telegraph’s scrutiny during the expenses scandal in 2010.

Here’s a list of the expenses they claimed:
LABOUR

1) David Blunkett

His second home in Derbyshire was rented out for £600 per month. He also claimed the cost of relaying a path to the tune of £1,600.

2) Alistair Darling

Claimed the cost of a second home whilst letting out his London property. The stamp duty on said property was also paid for by the taxpayer.
The Telegraph uncovered that the former Chancellor of the Exchequer had claimed four different homes as his second home in four years.

3) Peter Hain

Tried to claim two mortgages for homes in his constituency of Neath.

4) Paul Murphy

Plumbers at his house were paid for with taxpayer’s money. He explained that the water was “too hot” and the whole system had to be redone.

5) Dawn Primarolo

Had mortgage repayments on her second home in London paid for by tax payers whilst having a home in her constituency Bristol.

6) David Watts

Paid for home improvements including a kitchen at £3,543, a bathroom at £3,500 and £742 on redecorating his home, with a further £549 on a Phillips LCD 26″ television.

Newly appointee who didn’t claim expenses:

Tessa Jowell DBE

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS

7) Alan Beith

Received £117,000 for his second home, whilst his wife claimed £60,000 on the same home on House of Lords expenses.
During the General Election he also used his office expenses to ensure his secretary could be posted in is constituency.

8) Lorely Burt

Two months after being elected in 2005 Burt claimed the Stamp Duty on her flat at Westminster costing the public £12,500. With an added £746 for wardrobes and a further £1,110 on blinds.

9) Menzies Campbell

Has been forced to repay £1,490.66 that was claimed for an interior designer to refurbish his central London flat.

10) Don Foster

After claiming £3,450 on bathroom refurbishments, he later claimed £1,000 for a bed and a mattress and then claimed £800 a month mortgage on his London home.

CONSERVATIVES

11) William Hague

£1,200 per month on mortgage repayments was spent on housing the MP on his second home in London.

12) Andrew Lansley

He has been forced to repay £2,600 that was spent on decorating fees. This comes after having spent £4,000 on renovating his country home before selling it. All at a cost to the public.

13) George Young

Claimed the cost of a video camera on expenses. The camera was used to film clips of himself at work for YouTube. The videos seem so have since been removed.

14) David Willets

He billed taxpayers the cost of changing a light bulb. Has since been repaid.

15) Greg Baker

After selling a flat with a profit of £320,000, which was partially funded by the government, Greg Baker has been forced to repay £10,000.

16) Douglas Hogg

Famously claimed expenses on cleaning out his country manor moat. He has since been forced to repay £2,200.

17) James Arbuthnot

Cleaned out his country home swimming pool. He has been forced to repay this.

18) Anne Macintosh

After having claimed £5,000 on gardening at her Yorkshire home, she also claimed the cost of two mousetraps and mouse poison too. She was asked in 2006 for proof of her monthly rent on her second home which was £621. She has failed to provide any proof since 2000.

19) Andrew Robathan

Had claimed £3,300 a month on his London home before informing regulators of his move to a new property in his constituency which he claimed was “going to be refurbished”.
