Salford weather: Alert over strong winds and heavy rain

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for gale force winds and heavy rains from Monday evening into Tuesday.

Forecasters say an active frontal system will bring a spell of heavy and persistent rain over Greater Manchester during Monday evening with up to 20mm falling in most areas.

There is the risk of localised and river flooding, before the rain clears eastwards overnight.

Strong westerly winds will continue from around 7pm on Monday night for around 24 hours.

A deepening area of low pressure will move east throughout the night, bringing westerly gusts of 50-60 mph, while higher ground and exposed areas could see blasts up to 65-70 mph.

By Tuesday morning winds will turn northwesterly and while they are expected to ease throughout the day the public should be aware of strong gusts and cold winds, particularly during rain showers.
