Man rescued after falling into freezing River Irwell in Salford

A man fell into the River Irwell in Broughton, Salford, before being pulled to safety by firefighters.

At around 9.30pm on Sunday 13 September multiple police and fire crews were called to Frederick Road to reports of a man in the water.

Specialist lights were set up along the river bridge to illuminate the area and locate the man.

He is understood to have slipped and fallen in fully clothed while walking along the dark river bank.

He was unable to get out of the water and wasn’t spotted until a jogger heard his cries for help.

The length of time he spent in the cold waters are thought to have caused him to suffer from exposure.

He is being treated in hospital tonight.

Firefighters from Salford fire station spent around an hour pulling the man to safety using throw lines.

Once rescued, paramedics wrapped him in foil blankets before taking him to Salford Royal hospital for further assessment.
