Fun and frolics as Eccles special needs playgroup up and running

Eccles Special Needs Stay and Play has just completed its third evening of activities for local children with special needs.

Back in February SalfordOnline.com reported on how the idea was dreamed up by Louisa Nashir from Brookhouse in Eccles.

Louisa was at a loss after discovering that there were not enough fun after-school clubs to take her eight-year-old autistic daughter Kate.

Before the group opened, Louisa said: “When you’re bringing up a child with special needs it can often be lonely and sometimes it’s nice to speak to people who know what you are going though.”

Louisa has since updated us on how the group is doing since their opening three weeks ago.

“We had a fabulous opening night as 21 children attended with their families, the children and adults all enjoyed the activities we had set up and each child went away with a certificate.

“Each week we have two activities which vary, last week for example we made wind chimes followed by some sports fun which the children loved!

“We’ve just had an Easter Bonnet parade as well, this was another great evening.”

One parent, Stephanie Ashcroft, gave her backing to the playgroup: “It’s a friendly little group that gives parents the chance to do something creative with their children.

“There’s also the chance to talk to someone who has experienced so many similar issues with bringing up a disabled child.”

Louisa added: “The parents and carers have been very supportive and help a lot by sharing the group news via Facebook and word of mouth which helps tremendously.

“I must say we do enjoy seeing the parents stuck into the arts and crafts and letting daily stresses fade away.”
