Car on fire explodes at Eccles petrol station

A car caught ablaze at a petrol station in Eccles.

Two fire crews from Eccles were called to the BP garage on Wellington Road at 5.20pm this afternoon, Thursday 1 October.

Eyewitnesses reported smoke pouring from the car windows before a loud explosion-type bang.

Firefighters found the engine bay of a silver Ford Capri on fire but were able to put out the flames with water jets and foam.

Thick black smoke poured into the air and traffic backed up along Wellington Road towards the M602 roundabout at Junction 2 as police secured the scene.

Luckily no-one was reported injured and emergency crews managed to douse the flames before they spread.

Traffic is still slow along the M602 westbound between Junction 2 and Junction 1 for the Eccles M60 interchange
