This jukebox musical dramatizing the formation, success and eventful break-up of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons hit the Opera house in Manchester last night and had the audience hooked from the opening scenes.
Each member of the band: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito, give their own perspective on how four young boys from Jersey became household names in the 1960s. Their incredible success led them all the way to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Matt Corner takes the role of Frankie Valli. His vocal range is amazing and he has no problem hitting the high notes Valli was distinctive and famous for.
If you close your eyes (and I tried it) he could be mistaken for the man himself! No mean feat.
All the actors are superb as they meld into their characters with pitch perfect tones and beautiful harmonies.
They have The Four Seasons mannerisms and dance moves off to a tee and with bright lights, suave suits and a dollop of Brylcreem you are easily transported back to their heyday.
The Four Seasons back catalogue is pretty impressive and hit after hit is performed with gusto.
Their first number one in 1962 ‘Sherry’ was followed by ‘Big Girls don’t Cry’ ‘Walk Like a Man’ ‘December 1963 (Oh What a Night)’, ‘My Eyes Adored you’ ‘Beggin’ ‘Let’s Hang On’ ‘Rag Doll’ and my all time favourite ‘Who Loves you?’ plus many more.
Their eventful partnership spanning 30 years covers bankruptcy, changes in line up, romances and a terrible tragedy, which itself is an intriguing story.
For the older generation it doesn’t get much better than this for a trip down memory but I would say you don’t have to be a fan to appreciate this show.
Spectacular lighting, talented musicians and a wonderful cast giving their all result in a brilliant
atmosphere.
Jersey Boys plays at the Manchester Opera House until Saturday 31 October.
