Live: Adrian Morley press conference - AJ Bell Stadium

Salford rugby legend Adrian Morley is due to make a key statement about his future in a press conference today from 2pm at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Join us here from 1.45pm as we cover all the key points and reaction.

Salford-born Morley, 38, has hinted at retirement plans this week after it was revealed he is in high-altitude training for a world-record attempt, to play the first rugby league match on the volcanic ash summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This week Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash heaped praise on his club captain, who signed for the revitalised team on a two-year deal at the start of the 2014 season.

Morley: “The only player I didnt get to play with was my brother who tried to get me to play for Wales, but at the end of the day, I’m English, and love my country too much.”

And that, ladies and gents, brings today’s press conference to a close.

He will be missed on the field by his team mates, but not so much by the opposition.

Farewell Adrian, Salford salutes you.

Tim Sheens: “I’m sure he’ll get itchy feet and want to be on the pitch, but we’ll keep him busy elsewhere.”

Ian Watson: “He will be missed in the dressing room. He’s always first in his fitness drills, and we need to build players around the mould of Adrian Morley.

“He will be missed on the training field. He really is a warrior in the true sense of the word.”

Morley: “I’d like to be remembered as an honest player.

“It wouldn’t have felt right not to have represented Salford. I’m delighted to have done so, if not at the Willows, then here at the AJ Bell.

“It’s vital we retain our top flight status.”

Tim Sheens: “I knew him in Sydney, and having got to know him better whilst here, it’s been a pleasure and hopefully we can help him in his role as an ambassador for the club.

“We’ll keep him busy and help him get the smell of the dressing room out of his nose as he helps with all areas of the club, including recruitment.”

Adrian tells the press conference:

“The defining moment was hurting my neck at Bradford the other week. That was when I decided to call it a day”

“I was open minded about playing on, but that really decided it for me. My fitness is up there, but after speaking to my family, everyone has to finish at some point”

“Salford want to keep me involved, and I’ll be staying on at the club in an administrative role for now. It’s an honour to stay at my home town club.”

Surprisingly, there is no Marwan Koukash at the AJ Bell for this announcement.

After making his debut in 1995 as a sub at Leeds Rhinos, his career has taken him from the streets of Salford all the way to Sydney Roosters and back home again.

The first English player to win the rugby league trifecta of the Grand final, Challenge cup and NRL grand final, Moz is lauded across the game for his attitude and commitment.

On Sunday, he will be given a guard of honour by the players and be presented with a special memento by club legend and former captain Chris Hesketh MBE.

Dont forget, Sundays game will be preceded by the Army v RAF inter services game, with tickets for veterans and guests only £5.

It would be great to see a full house for what should be Adrians final ever home game.

Adrian and his wife have announced that their new son is to be named Jonah Adrian Morley.

As a sign of respect compliments are flooding in from former players and team mates for the giant of rugby league.

Andy Hay, former Sheffield Eagles, Castleford Tigers and Leeds Rhinos player, who both played with and coached Adrian said: “It was a great honour and a pleasure to have played and coached Moz.

“He is uncompromising in his approach on the field and a great friend off it”

“No one said it was gonna be easy. Good luck pal”

Chev Walker, current Bradford Bulls player who played alongside him during their time together said: “As a 16 year old lad, Moz took me under his wing and showed me the ropes on and off the field.

“He inspired and still inspires me to be a great pro and a humble bloke.”

Moz…

The player and the legend.

At 2pm we will find out what he plans to do once the season is over.

We know that he will be hoping to play in the worlds highest rugby league game up Kilimanjaro in aid of the Steve Prescott foundation, along side many others, but after he comes back down to earth?

The press room is filling up here at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Stay tuned.
