Johnson eyes up promotion prize as Salford come home

The Ammies return to Moor Lane after four consecutive away games when they host promotion rivals Spennymoor Town on Saturday.

Wins in all four of those games have also kept Salford’s automatic promotion hopes alive as they find themselves three points clear of Darlington, although the Quakers have gained another game in hand after last weekend’s clash at Warrington was postponed.

Spennymoor are putting together their own little assault on the top though, and will be seeking a sixth win in eight on their first trip to Moor Lane.

A win would put them within catching distance of The Ammies with two games more to play, and closer to a second promotion in as many seasons.

Salford already have the points and it would be easy to say all they have to do is keep winning matches, but joint manager Anthony Johnson is aware of the challenge it sets for the chasers, and after coming from behind to beat Scarborough Athletic last week said how he would be the first to shake the hand of anyone who catches his side.

“I think six points with five games to go is a massive gap, and if Darlington go and win their games in hand or whoever else, Northwich or Spennymoor, then fair play to them, there’s nothing we can do, we can only affect our games and we’re doing that at the minute.”

Although they have the worst points tally on the road of the current top five, Spennymoor haven’t been pushovers having recorded five draws, and Salford proved they weren’t entirely invincible at home last time out at Moor Lane after a 2-0 loss to Lancaster City – just their second of the season on home turf.

With so much to play for, this could be the most decisive game of the season in terms of how the remaining weeks will play out.

Sam Madeley is available again for Salford after serving his three match ban for his red card against Lancaster, although having scored 10 goals in their last four matches it is a luxury for Johnson and Morley.

They do lose centre back Paul Linwood to suspension though, while Cavell Coo still has one match to serve.

Owen Roberts is still a doubt, so one of Robbie Williams, Jason Jarrett or Phil Dean could deputise.

In a late withdrawal for Spennymoor Anthony Peacock has failed a fitness test and is unavailable.
