Arson fears after fire crews called to Eccles Crown Theatre

Fire crews were called to a derelict former theatre on Liverpool Road in Eccles last night after fears it had caught ablaze.

At around 8.50pm on Tuesday 24 November three fire crews from Eccles were called to the former Crown Theatre after a report of smoke coming from the roof space of the building.

Fortunately it was a false alarm and no damage was reported.

SalfordOnline.com community reporter Albert spoke to a member of the local heritage rescue group Save the Crown Theatre, who were meeting near the building at Nur Malaysia cafe at the time.

Volunteer artist Bree Hughes, who helped install this artwork at the front of the theatre, said: “I actually live behind the building. We’d just finished our usual meeting and were coming out and I saw smoke. At first I thought it was a car parked next to the building but then I realised it was coming from the building itself.

“I brought a couple of our members out to see that I wasn’t seeing things as it was quite dark and the next thing I know the fire engines arrived.”

The Victorian, Grade II-listed Crown, which developers want to demolish and replace with 95 flats was last hit by fire in June 2013, when the first and second-floor balconies went up in smoke in a suspected arson.
