Roadworks: Liverpool Road in Irlam to shut this weekend

Drivers are being warned to expect delays in Irlam this weekend as parts of Liverpool Road close completely for resurfacing.

Contractors for Urban Vision will start work on the road between Excalibur Way and Fairhills Road today, Friday 10 April, and continue between 8am and 6pm each day until Sunday 12 April.

It is part of street scene works to narrow the B5230 and reduce sections to 20mph.

The work will be completed in sections but Liverpool Road will be inaccessible where work is taking place.

Residents and local businesses complained when the works overran in November last year, citing difficulties for elderly people, pedestrians and shop owners.

Urban Vision was forced to issue an apology after repeated delays into rush hour lasted a week over schedule.

On all three days some side roads will be accessible but with diversions via Fairhills Road, the A57 Cadishead Way and Excalibur Way.

On Friday 10 April Liverpool Road will be shut between Clarendon Road and Astley Road.

Some side roads will be accessible including Astley Road, Preston Avenue, Clarendon Road, Station Road, Tramway Road but “access will be controlled”, say Urban Vision, while no access will be available to the Railway Inn car park.

On Saturday 11 April Liverpool Road shuts between Astley Road and Dixon Street.

Astley Road, Alexander Grove, Delhi Road, Dixon Road and the Post Office will be accessible.

On Sunday 12 April it is closed Woods Road and Mariners Way while work also takes place on the Fairhills Road / Liverpool Road junction but access is maintained to Fairhills Road.

Roadworkers will man the Fairhills Road and Excalibur Way junctions.

When resurfacing work is finished, contractors will return to add a new pedestrian crossing and paint new narrower road lines (due to be completed by early May), and by summer 2015 the 20mph zone should be in force.
