Sainsbury’s in Eccles hit by axe-wielding thieves


Armed raiders hit a Sainsbury’s Local store on Gilda Brook Road in Eccles.

Two men in black balaclavas walked in through the front door of the former White Horse pub and pulled out an axe and a hatchet.

One jumped over the counter and demanded staff on duty open the tills, threatening them with violence.

The store was on lockdown after theives escaped to a waiting car with cash and cigarettes.

Luckily none of the staff were physically injured.

Police were called to the scene at 7.40pm on Thursday evening.

It’s not yet know what make or model of car was used as a getaway, nor in which direction the armed thieves made their escape.

The men are described as wearing grey tracksuits with black lines down the sides.

Detectives are now scouring internal and external CCTV to identify the men.

This footage is expected to be released as the investigatgion proceeds further.

Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who witnessed a car speeding from the scene is asked to call Greater Manchester Police on 101.
