Jo Cox fund hits £1m with 33,000 donors

A fund set up in memorial to the Labour MP Jo Cox has passed £1 million in donations.

The 41-year old died after being shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire on Thursday 16 June.

Thomas Mair, 52, from Birstall, faces charges of murder, possession of an offensive weapon and grievous bodily harm in connection with the attack.

Jo Cox’s husband Brendan praised the generosity of the public, saying the money would “change lives”.

The cash total, which currently stands at £1,081,291 will be split between three charities: Hope not Hate, the Royal Voluntary Service, the White Helmets, a volunteer civil defense organization in Syria.

Friends set up the fund in the wake of Jo’s death.

It had passed half a million pounds after just 24 hours and has grown to become the largest UK campaign on the fundraising platform.

Parliament was recalled on Monday 20 June for politicians to pay tribute to the Batley and Spen MP.

A public event is planned for this Wednesday in Trafalgar Square in London for what would have been Ms Cox’s 42nd birthday.
