Could you foster a homeless hound?

Dogs Trust Manchester launches foster scheme for dogs

Dogs Trust Manchester is appealing to local dog lovers to help homeless hounds in need of a little extra TLC by volunteering to foster a dog.

The charity’s Home from Home fostering scheme is being rolled out across the region in the hope of giving dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes the chance to be looked after in a temporary home whilst they wait for their forever family to adopt them.

Home from Home Co-ordinator, Corinna O’Neill, says: “Some dogs aren’t cut out for kennel life. Some find it stressful and others, such as dogs that are poorly or pregnant, strays, older dogs who are used to a quieter life or puppies, would all benefit from being in a home rather than kennels.

“Since the Rehoming Centre opened in 2014 we’ve had incredible support and we’re hoping that if there are people out there who want a dog in their life but can’t commit to having their own four-legged friend at the moment, they could foster one of our lovely dogs.”

One dog at the Denton Rehoming Centre that would benefit from a foster home is six-year-old ex racing Greyhound, Blake (main photo).

Corinna says: “Blake is a lovely, calm boy who was abandoned when it was decided he was too slow on the track. Contrary to what people sometimes think, Greyhounds are often couch potatoes and don’t need much exercise, which is definitely true of Blake. He is great on the lead and loves a walk but then likes nothing more than cosying up on a comfy bed.

“He adores being with people so if he could live with a foster carer who can help him begin to understand that once he is in in a loving home, being left alone for a short period of time doesn’t mean he’s being abandoned, he will make the perfect pet.”

Fostering is completely free with all costs and essentials such as food and bedding provided. Dogs Trust also provides training advice and guidance if needed and 24 hour support.

If you would like to offer a foster home to Blake or another homeless hound at Dogs Trust Manchester please call the Rehoming Centre on 0300 303 0292. To find out more you can go to www.dogstrust.org.uk.
