Police investigating city centre rape


Police were called after an 18 year-old woman was raped shortly before 7am on Saturday 23 July 2016, in the Piccadilly basin area. The location is described as the top of a set of stairs leading to the canal path at the back of Jutland House. The woman is now being supported by specially trained officers.

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Two men, aged 18, were arrested on suspicion of rape and they remain in police custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Ryan Davies of GMP’s Public Protection Division said: “I understand that an incident of this nature might cause concern in the community and I want to offer reassurance that we have increased patrols in the area and officers are supporting the woman at this extremely difficult time.”

“I am urging anyone who was in the area at the time to please come forward, as you may have information that could help the investigation.
