Murder probe launched as police step up search for missing Salford man Michael Martin


Police searching for a missing man from Salford have launched a murder investigation.

Michael Martin, 25, from Clifton was reported missing on Monday 8 August.

He was last seen at his home on Sidmouth Drive in Blackley in the early hours of Sunday 7 August 2016.

His car was found on Velmere Avenue in Blackley, around half a mile from his home, near Heaton Park.

In a statement released on Tuesday Greater Manchester Police said: “Police are now treating this investigation as a non-body murder and appealing for anyone with information about what may have happened to Michael to get in touch.”

Speaking earlier this week, Detective Inspector Clare Devlin, of Salford division, said: “We are worried that he has come to harm.

“We believe he may have been the victim of an assault, and if that is the case it is even more important that we find him soon.”

Family say that for Michael to go missing is “very out of character”.

In a bid to discover Michael’s whereabout officers searched two homes in Blackley, one on Victoria Avenue and one on Longton Road, as well as a room at the Premier Inn on Middleton Road in Higher Blackley.

Detective Inspector Andrew Naismith from GMP’s Major Incident Team said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have any information about what has happened to missing Michael Martin.

“We are investigating a number of possibilities; however a non-body murder investigation has now been launched.

“Our specialist support officers are supporting Michael’s family through this incredibly difficult time and my thoughts are with them.”
