Watch: Agecroft Power Station demolition revisited for 90th anniversary

Stunning footage of the demolition of Agecroft Power Station has gone on show ahead of a local firm’s celebration to mark the 90th anniversary since it opened.

On 23 September 2015 technology firm JMC IT are hosting an event at their Agecroft offices, at the site of the former Agecroft Power Station.

It’ll feature staff in period costume, 1920’s-style food, vintage cars and ex-Power Station employees touring the buildings.

The coal-fired power station – two stacks and four enormous cooling towers which dominated the skyline – generated 100,000Kw of electricity to power homes and industry in Greater Manchester and beyond.

It was opened on 23 September 1925 before being expanded in 1962.

When Agecroft Colliery closed in 1991, then power station followed soon after.

It was formally decomissioned in 1993, before being demolished in a huge controlled explosion on 8 May 1994.

Crowds gathered on nearby fields to watch the demolition of the iconic structures.

Smoke and dust from the blast could be seen for miles around.

The Category-B prison HM Forest Bank was built on the site in 2000.

Now the Agecroft Building is home to JMC’s 100 staff, all of whom will be involved in the celebrations in September.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “This building has been hugely significant to the area in terms of employment since it opened as a power station in 1925, supplying over 100,000kw of power to the local area and employing hundreds of locals.

“In September, JMC will recognise this great milestone for the building and local area with a programme of events including a 1920s-themed event.”

The event takes place on Wednesday 23 September 2015 from 11am – 2pm at Riverside, Agecroft Road, Salford.
