Morrisons to pull plug on Little Hulton supermarket

Morrisons will close its Little Hulton store in 12 weeks time, SalfordOnline.com has learned.

Staff found out from managers today that they were being made redundant.

Workers have been told they could not guarantee being placed at another local store and so have three months to find new jobs.

It’s understood the store will stop trading by early December.

Earlier today the supermarket giant told SalfordOnline.com that it would also close its flagship £10 million Phoebe Street branch in Ordsall, with over 200 staff affected.

Local councillors who fought to get the chain to open in Salford said it was “a bitter blow”.

It’s thought a similar number will be affected in Little Hulton.

The popular town centre location is well-used, especially by local elderly people, so the closure plan has come as a shock to many.

Councillor Pat Ryan, who represents Little Hulton, said: “It’s devastating to hear this news.

“The supermarket is a great asset for the community, especially since the Co-operative closed.”

Morrisons bought out the superstore from previous occupant Netto in May 2011.

It announced proposals today, Thursday 10 September, for 11 store closures in the wake of a dramatic 47% tumble in half-yearly profits.

And it lost £30 million from the sale of 140 its failing ‘M local’ convenience stores earlier this week.

The other nine store locations have not yet been confirmed.

In a statement Morrisons repeated that it could not find a way to make the Armitage Avenue branch profitable.

A spokesman said: “We have looked extremely carefully at whether these stores can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making them viable.

“We are therefore proposing their closure.

“We are consulting with colleagues and unions and we will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and redeploy colleagues around our business.”
