SalfordOnline.com is opening up a series of newsroom placements for journalism students at their Eccles offices throughout 2015/16.
A new website with vastly-increased functionality and a strong and growing local readership has put the news website in the position where they can offer short-term placements to the best candidates.
A variety of placements are on offer to fit around lectures and paid work.
University of Salford student Andie Riley, who runs the @QuaysRL Twitter account, has spent the summer working as a rugby league correspondent for SalfordOnline.com, covering big stories coming out of Salford Red Devils and Swinton Lions.
“It’s given me the chance to improve my social media, live-blogging, and match-reporting skills ahead of another year at Salford University,” said former soldier Andie, 44.
“My advice? Apply, work hard and always be on the lookout for stories and features you can pitch.
“If you get offered the chance to work with SalfordOnline.com, take it.
“Opportunities like this don’t come around that often – especially with the latitude you get given to experiment and try your own thing.”
Former work experience students have interviewed everyone from cabinet ministers to skydiving OAPs and have gone on to work in journalism for the likes of Insider Media, BBC Radio Manchester and The Bolton News.
“SalfordOnline.com was founded by volunteers, and runs as a not-for-profit news website,” said News Editor Tom Rodgers.
“We’re getting 40,000 people a week reading the site, which is a huge local audience with which to raise your profile.
“Now we want keen, news-hungry students who would benefit from working for a professional news website with a strong focus on local news and social media.”
