New 24-hour Irlam petrol station greenlit

Delayed plans for a new Irlam petrol station have been approved today by Salford City Council.

Blackburn-based petrol retailer The Kay Group applied for planning consent for a 24-hour filling station with five petrol pumps, a Spar store and hot food cafe and takeaway – intended to be a Gregg’s – on a council-owned roundabout at the junction of Liverpool Road and the A57 Cadishead Way.

The land itself used to be a refuse tip, and is covered in overgrown scrub, trees and weeds, none of which merit protected status.

The entrance/exit to the filling station will be on the B5320 Liverpool Road.

SalfordOnline.com reported that the plans were under consideration last month, but concerns over access, traffic management from Liverpool Road, and the relocation of a bus stop, saw the proposals deferred from Thursday 3 September to today’s planning panel.

The cafe will offer a drive-thru and will be open 6am to 9pm seven days a week, while a new jet washing facility will open from 8am to 10pm seven days a week.

The firm projects 10 full-time and 15 part-time positions will be created.

Local councillors approved of the extra shopping options the store would provide for residents on the nearby Crossfield estate.

Councillor Roger Jones and local resident Chris Williams attended the planning panel and told SalfordOnline.com they were satisfied with the assurances given by the applicant on all issues of concern, including traffic, safety, opening hours and that the pedestrian crossing would remain as it is.

The only outstanding issue is the location of the nearby bus stop, which the applicants want to remove altogether.

The Kay Group already run the Texaco Irlam Service Station around half a mile away on Liverpool Road, along with 14 other petrol stations in Halifax, Burnley and across the North West.
