Dancer tells how Salford Stars scoop multiple wins in Prestatyn

An historic Salford morris dancing club has been honoured again after sweeping the board in a recent competition in Wales.

The Salford Stars, who have been running for over 30 years, brought back trophy after trophy from the annual Pontins Prestatyn competition in early October.

15-year-old Kayleigh Parker, a student at Albion Academy in Broughton, Salford, told us: “These wins are down to our amazing trainers: Vicki Bond, Gill Rowlands and Sam Bond – they have worked so hard to keep the dancing troupe going strong for so many years.

“I’ve been dancing with them since I was 10.

“I believe that ‘teamwork makes the dream work’.

“It’s just a great place to enjoy yourself and meet new friends, and of course we tend to win quite a lot as well.”

Their success saw the Seniors group, for those age 15 and over, win Troupe of the Year, Leader of the Year and Mascot of the Year for Ella O’Neill.

The Tinies group, for those aged 9 to 11-years-old also won a special award for doing a display.

But the club survives on a shoestring, and the talented dancers can’t even afford to travel to the venues together.

The hard work goes on throughout, as the troupe travel around the country gathering points from competitions to take to the big weekend at the end of the dance year.

Salford Stars are always looking for new dancers.

They train at St Boniface’s Social Club on Lower Broughton Road every Tuesday and Thursday, 6pm to 8pm.

They’ll take dancers from as young as three, who can join Salford Stars ‘Babies’, while those age 6-9 will join the ‘Dinkies’, the ‘Tinies’ if you’re aged 9 to 11, Salford Stars Juniors if you are 11 to 15 years old and the Seniors group for the over 15s.
