MP raising money in Walkden for 11,000 unpaid carers

There are almost 7 million unpaid family carers in Britain and that number is rising year on year.

Looking after ill, frail, elderly or disabled family members is not a duty any of us apply for, but it’s one we have to do.

So to highlight the plight of unpaid carers local MP Barbara Keeley is to host a Britain’s Best Breakfast event at the Walkden Gateway on Friday 23 October to raise money for the Carers Trust.

The number of people over 85 in the UK, the age group most likely to need care, is expected to increase by over 50% to 1.9 million over the next decade.

Practical help for these vast numbers of people – ranging from respite breaks to advice and support for younger carers – comes from the Carer’s Trust, which runs the well-established Carer’s Centre in Salford.

“In Worsley and Eccles South there are almost 11,000 unpaid family carers,” said Keeley.

“This number is expected to continue to rise and it is estimated that three in five of us will become carers at some point in our lives.

“The Salford Carers Centre does a great job and I am pleased to be hosting this breakfast event to help raise money so that the Carers Trust can continue that work here and across the UK.

“Please come along and join me and other local people for breakfast and refreshments at the Walkden Gateway on Friday October and to help us to raise funds so that the Carers Trust can continue its excellent work supporting carers locally.”

The event is being held from 9.30am to 11am on Friday 23 October at Walkden Gateway, 2 Smith Street, Walkden M28 3EZ.
