Irlam station attack: Police hunt thug after man violently assaulted

British Transport Police have released the picture of a man they want to speak to after a 24-year-old was punched and kicked in the head in a violent assault at Irlam train station.

On Tuesday 4 August the two men were on the 13.16 Northern Rail service from Manchester Oxford Road to Liverpool Lime Street.

When the train pulled in to Irlam, the victim was pushed off the train by a man who attacked him, punching and kicking at his head and body.

The 24-year old was left “bruised and bloodied” and only escaped the beating by jumping back onto the train, while his attacker ran off past the 1923 station bar and through the car park.

Officers believe the man pictured could have vital information about what happened and urge him or anyone who recognises him to come forward to assist officers with their enquiries.

Investigating officer Inspector Michelle Wedderburn said: “As the conductor released the doors at Irlam, the victim was pushed off the train by another man.

“He then violently attacked him, punching and kicking the victim’s head and body.

“The conductor urged the victim to get back on the train, which he did, and the train left the station.

Insp Wedderburn added: “This was a particularly nasty and violent attack which left the 24-year-old victim bruised and bloodied.

“It is vital we track down the person responsible.

“Violence like this will not be tolerated on the rail network; everyone has the right to travel in safety without violence or threats.”
