Salford Journalism students appointed official reporters for Asian Media Awards

Two students from the University of Salford will be interviewing some of the biggest hitters in the world of Journalism at the upcoming Asian Media Awards.

Gorana Jelovina and Tom Percival, both MA Journalism Postgraduates, will have a chance to shine, whilst covering the upcoming Asian Media Awards on Thursday October 29.

The event held at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate and will welcome celebrities from the world of television, film and radio. Past recipients of the prestigious awards have included leading figures such as broadcaster Krishnan-Guru Murthy and director Waris Hussein.

Tom, 25, from Salford, said: “It’s an immense honour to be covering such a prestigious event, and I’m extremely excited to be involved. It’ll be rewarding to meet some of the people who inspired me to become a journalist.”

Gorana, 22, added: “It’s fantastic to be given the opportunity to cover these awards. I’m really looking forward to putting the practical skills I have learned through my studies to good use.”

One familiar face that they might see at the ceremony is Inzy Rashid. Inzy, a BA Journalism Student, has been nominated as part of an award following his turn hosting a breakfast show on Asian Sound Radio.

The two students have already been heavily involved in the awards, after covering the shortlist announcement at ITV Studios in London. Here they spoke to award-winning, former BBC Sport Editor Mihir Bose, and broadcaster, writer, journalist, and documentary maker Sarfraz Mansoor.

Both men wish to see greater diversity in the media industry. Mr Bose said: “I don’t think the main stream media is diverse enough. It is getting diverse but it’s a difficult thing. I don’t think the diversity of the media reflects the diversity of the community.”

The University of Salford sponsors the awards, which celebrates the talent of professionals who excel in the Asian, and mainstream media.
