5* Review: Morgan & West’s Utterly Spiffing Spectacular Magic Show – The Lowry, Salford Quays

Morgan & West are a duo of time-travelling Victorian magicians, and rather spiffing they are too.

There’s 50 minutes of pure family enjoyment on show here.

The pair enter The Lowry Theatre with their good guy and bad guy roles firmly established: Morgan a cheeky chap and West very obviously dislikes children.

The stage is set with a number of simple props and some huge suitcases which invites the curious audience to imagine what lies within.

From the opener, a disappearing bottle trick which confused the audience, and each magician’s Tommy Copper-style wrong turns, this fantastic duo had the audience giggling throughout.

My son was chosen to go on stage for one of the tricks where he put colour into the painting for Mr Morgan; he was ecstatic and was thrilled I managed to film it.

This video has now been watched and rewatched several times and he claims this be to the best trick ever!

So many children in the audience got the opportunity to go on stage, the interaction was such a pleasant alternative to shows I have seen before, watching their faces light up when they became the star of the show was so exciting.

Each had a special job to do whether that was checking for the bullet in Mr Morgan’s mouth or choosing what balloon animal they wanted making.

Rivalry often disturbs co-operation as Mr Morgan hilariously interrupts Mr West’s bombastic pre-trick patter or suddenly brings one child after another on to the stage holding a card and reading it aloud, throwing more complications into his routine.

The latter mode climaxes brilliantly with the Amazing – and infinitely puzzling – Card Trick.

If I could bottle up the laughter in the room I could earn a small fortune, we absolutely loved this show and can’t wait to tell everyone about it.
