Easter weekend delight for Irlam FC

By Warren Dodd
Returning striker Jordan Icely scored the opening goal of a 2-0 win over Bootle based Side Litherland Remyca at the weekend, Dave Wright following up with the second on a sunny afternoon at Silver St.

The Bank Holiday win moved Irlam up one place to 14th in NWCFL Div One, but narrowed the gap above them, with just six points separating 14th from 9th in a tight table.

Decent possession by Irlam just about gave them the upper hand through the first phase of the game, the first real chance falling to Jake Connolly, the Irlam forward finding a way through to goal only to be crowded out at the crucial moment.

Irlam midfielder Dave Wright was on hand with a couple of long range shots that were close to the target but ultimately just over the oppositions bar as the game searched for its first goal.

A decent attempt at the opposite end of the pitch saw Litherland’s Jamie Colbourn go close with a volley that just went wide of Irlam keeper Lee Whites goal.

Last action of a goalless half came Irlam’s way when centre half Ryan Ledson went close, only for the attempt to come to nothing except to signal the half time break.

The second half got underway, and Ledson was back in the action straight away as he found the back of the net almost immediately, only for the official to disallow the goal for a slight pull on the Litherland defender.

Returning striker, Gary Prescott continued his rehabilitation with an appearance from the bench, an early chance for Prescott saw him swivel and fire just wide of the Litherland goal.

With 20 minutes to go, the breakthrough seemed certain, when Irlam centre half Connor Braithwaite connected sweetly with a volley inside the Litherland box, only to be denied by a superb save by Lake in the visiting goal.

However, minute later the breakthrough came, and a loose ball in the Litherland box was pounced upon by Icely, the Irlam no10 smashing home a perfect volley to open the scoring and sink Litherland hearts.

Five minutes later, and the game was wrapped up when Steve Mills broke down the left side before cutting inside and firing goalwards, the shot parried away by Lake only for the visiting keeper to be undone as Irlam midfielder Wright picked up the rebound before driving his shot into the bottom corner to put the game beyond doubt for Irlam.

The remaining minutes of the game were played to a conclusion, 2-0 the scoreline at Full Time, giving Irlam maximum points over the Easter period.

Irlam FC are at home this coming weekend in NWCFL Div One, when they play Chadderton FC. Kickoff is 3pm at Silver St.
