Salford weather warning: Yellow alert in place as more heavy rain predicted

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning in Salford and Greater Manchester for Tuesday and Wednesday as more heavy rainfall is expected to hit the region.

Despite some rainstorms, the weekend’s amber alert for the North West didn’t quite live up to expectations.

But because of saturated ground and standing water in places, flooding is still possible over the next two days.

Forecasters are predicting between 20mm and 40mm of rainfall, with a yellow ‘be prepared’ alert in place from 10am on Tuesday until around 3pm on Wednesday.

This could have a detrimental impact on the road network, and especially around the pinch points of the M602, the A57 Regent Road and Junction 11 of the M60 for Eccles/Irlam.

The Met Office explains: “The public should be aware that, given the already saturated conditions, flooding is possible either from standing water or from rivers already swollen by recent rainfall.”

High winds in Salford on Sunday saw police close Bury New Road at 2pm after a large tree collapsed, blocking the road.

The Met Office warning states drivers should “be aware of the potential for further impacts from flooding such as disruption to travel thanks to short periods of intense rainfall”.

Salford City FC kick off at their Moor Lane home on Tuesday night against Mickleover Sports, so fans should be prepared for bad conditions as heavy rain and wind are expected throughout the match, as well as cool temperatures of around 7 °C.

By Wednesday it’s expected that the rain will decrease but wind speeds will pick back up.

The Met Office’s Chief Forecaster explains: “On Wednesday winds will increase with local gales possible, particularly as rainfall clears, and these may increase into Thursday.

“The first system is not expected to bring any further flooding, with the second system then bringing risk of further disruption.”

For tonight, rain is expected to start falling late in the evening, continuing throughout most of Tuesday with some dry spells in the early hours.
