It’s understood that North West Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene but later stood down.

Fire crews stabilised the lorry with stocks and prepared to cut the roof from the Skoda.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire said their teams were assessing the situation and would use a Weber cutting tool to free the injured man.

It’s not yet known whether the car driver’s injuries are life-threatening.

By 11am was taken to Salford Royal Hospital by road ambulance.

A second casualty, the driver of the HGV, was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Part of the roundabout was closed off to traffic and large numbers of police were at the scene.

Traffic backed up in all directions with long delays expected on the A57 Liverpool Road on the approach to the motorway roundabout through Peel Green, and in the direction of Irlam.

Update: 11.25am Fire crews have confirmed they have put a stop on the incident and will be clearing the scene to leave.

The car has been moved to the Eccles side of the roundabout.

Traffic problems are ongoing on the A57 Liverpool Road between Irlam and Eccles.
