Man refused admittance on Eccles tram with bike smashes window with a brick

Police are looking for who man smashed a window after throwing a brick at a Metrolink tram driver who told him he couldn’t take his bike on-board.

The incident happened at the Ladywell stop on the Eccles line at about 11am on Wednesday 25 November.

After being told by the driver that he couldn’t take his bike on the tram, the man threw a brick at the driver through his cab window.

The brick missed the driver but smashed an internal window, causing the tram to be taken out of service and bringing minor delays to the Eccles line.

RATP Dev, who operate Metrolink on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), has reported the incident to police.

TfGM’s Metrolink Director, Peter Cushing, said: “To attack a driver that is simply doing their job in this way is totally unacceptable.

“Regardless of what anyone thinks about the conditions of carriage, they are there in the interests of our passengers’ safety and to react in such a violent way because you’ve been told you can’t take a bike on board defies belief.

“At about the time this happened I was viewing some excellent adverts, prepared by school children, about the consequences of criminal behaviour on the network – and whoever has done this could certainly learn something from the children involved.

“We have reported this incident to the police and I would encourage anyone who saw what happened or has information about the person responsible to call them.”
