Watch: Shocking footage of boy, 16, who robbed Salford Subway armed with machete

A teenager who robbed a sandwich shop in Irlams o’th Height in Salford armed with a machete has been given a 12-month sentence.

The attack happened at around 8pm on Thursday 19 October.

Video released by police shows the 16-year-old walk into Subway on Bolton Road, threatening staff with a large blade before haplessly trying to pull the till from its hoardings.

He gets out of the front door but is immediately accosted by two police officers. The offender tries to escape by throwing the till at their heads but misses and is pulled to the ground.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to robbery and assault to resist arrest at an earlier hearing.

On Thursday 3 December he was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to a 12-month detention order, to be followed by a six month training and supervision order.

Chief Inspector Mark Dexter of Specialist Operations said: “The boy went into the shop armed with a machete and threatened staff using violence and intimidation.

“He thought he had gotten away with it and was shocked to find officers waiting for him at the door.

“When he realised he had been caught, he even threw the cash-till at the officer’s heads and it was fortunate that it missed.

“I hope today’s sentence shows that if you commit such acts of violence, we will catch you and justice will be done.”
