Pensioner, 78, offers £1000 reward to catch fake cops who robbed him at gunpoint

The elderly victim of an armed burglary has offered £1000 of his own money as a reward for anybody who comes forward to help catch the men who robbed his home with a handgun.

At around 11:30am on Thursday 26 March 2015, the victim, a 78-year-old man, was at his home in the Halliwell area of Bolton when he answered a knock at the door.

When he opened the door, two men claiming to be police officers pushed past him and lead him into the lounge.

Greater Manchester Police this week issued a warning over elderly people in Worsley being targeted over the phone by conmen pretending to be police officers.

One of the offenders then took out a handgun and forced him to stay in the lounge whilst his partner in crime searched the rest of the property. Fearing for his safety the victim opened a window and attempted to escape and shout for help but was unable to get away.

The two men left shortly after with a quantity of cash and other items, exiting through the back door and running off in an unknown direction.

Police are now appealing for anybody with information to come forward and the victim has offered £1000 of his own money as a reward for any information that leads to the offenders being convicted.

The first offender is described as an approximately 5ft 10in tall man with a local accent wearing a long sleeved black top with grey around the collar and a black balaclava with grey around the eyes.

The second offender is described as an approximately 5ft 10in tall man with a local accent wearing a black top with grey on it.

Detective Constable Pam Chandler said: “The victim suffered a terrifying ordeal at the hands of these two thugs after which he was very shook up and understandably so.

“Although his attempts to call for help were unsuccessful, he was very quick to contact the police and I would like to pay tribute to him for the assistance that he has given us throughout this investigation.

“We are very keen to speak to anybody with information about what happened, whether it be something they have heard or if they actually know who the offenders are.”

Anybody with information should contact police on 0161 856 5619 or 0161 856 5608. Alternatively they can call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
