Swinton care centre launches dementia support group

A care centre in Swinton has launched a dementia support group for families and care-givers on the first Wednesday of every month.

The two-hour sessions at the Fountains Care Centre on Swinton Hall Road aim to bring together those caring for people living with dementia to raise questions and discuss the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis.

It’ll be hosted by Ann Wilmot, the partner of resident Bill Wilmot, and is open to anyone in the local community who is providing care or support to someone with dementia.

Last year the Fountains launched a popular project calling for donations of radios, mangles and local memorabilia from the 1930s to the 1950s to help patients recall their past and promote better mental health.

Charles Grant-Parkes, director of Liberty Healthcare, which manages The Fountains Care Centre, said: “This is a great initiative developed by the staff at The Fountains Care Centre.

“We are part of the Alzheimer’s Society ‘Dementia Friendly’ initiative which focuses on improving inclusion and quality of life for those people living with dementia.

“By developing this dementia support group, we are ensuring that this level of inclusion also extends to those people in our community who
are supporting a loved-one or friend living with dementia, a major challenge in itself.”

If you would like more information about this group, or wish to book a place to attend, please contact The Fountains Care Centre on 0161 794 5814
or via email the fountains@liberty-health-care.co.uk.

Salford has some of the best local groups dealing with dementia, including the Singing with Dementia programme at Humphrey Booth Centre on Worsley Road.

A special concert will also be held this week to celebrate two years since the opening of Salford University’s Institute for Dementia, in association with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
