Revealed: Salix plan to knock down 146 houses to build 161 homes on Poets Estate Swinton

Social housing provider Salix Homes plans to demolish 146 properties in a bid to build 161 new homes on the Poets Estate in Swinton, SalfordOnline.com can reveal.

The Poets Estate Steering Group, made up of residents, councillors and Salix reps, voted in favour of the proposals.

Salix has now submitted a planning application to Salford City Council.

146 homes on an area of the estate where the properties are affected by structural issues will be knocked down.

These are on Blantyre Street, Shakespeare Road, Stevenson Road, Tennyson Road, Kingsley Road and Wordsworth Road.

The new homes will be a mix of two, three and four-bed homes, 120 of which will be available for rent from Salix Homes, replacing the 119 rental properties being demolished, while 41 will be for sale.

In March Salford City Council transferred 8,500 homes to Salix in an historic housing deal.

Mark Foster, head of investment at Salix Homes, said the plans would fulfil a promise the group made to tenants to deliver the development if the transfer went ahead.

He said: “We have worked very closely with the residents every step of the way and we are confident that our significant investment in this community will help deliver much-needed new and improved homes for Salford.

“This is an exciting time for Salix Homes and our residents as we continue to work together to develop desirable and sustainable communities which will make this area a much more attractive place to live and work.”

The plans are expected to be approved by the council in March 2016, and Salix Homes hopes to start work on site by November 2016.

The project will be carried out over four phases and is expected to be completed in summer 2019.
