Swinton swimming ace Hannah Payton rewarded for successful year

A teenage swimmer from Swinton is celebrating after scooping several awards at her swimming club’s presentation evening.

Hannah Payton, 18, who has Down’s Syndrome, was rewarded for what has been a hugely successful year, including representing Team GB in the Special Olympic summer games in France.

The Eccles College student has been swimming since the age of four and trains at Cheshire Penguins swimming club.

Earlier this year Hannah was supported by 8-year-old Millie Mae Burgess-Greenwood from Little Hulton.

Volunteers for the charity set-up in honour of the seriously ill Bridgewater Primary School tot helped raise thousands of pounds with a series of supermarket bag-packs to help Hannah compete with Team GB in Lyon.

Her mum Jutta explained: “All the family is immensely proud of Hannah and what she’s doing.

“There were only six swimmers representing Great Britain and Hannah was chosen to be one for them.

“She also won an award for best attitude in the team.”

As well as bagging several trophies, it was also announced on the night that Hannah will be Cheshire Penguins team captain for 2016.

Hannah will continue to compete in national and international swimming competitions next year, and plans to compete once again in the Down Syndrome European Championships in Southampton.

When she competed in the 2014 she won silver in 25m butterfly and bronze in 50m freestyle and hopes to do even better this year.
