Police have released more information about two masked men who tried to rob a supermarket in Salford armed with a claw hammer.

SalfordOnline.com broke the news about the robbery, which happened at 5.10pm on Monday 13 April at the frozen food store inside Salford Shopping City on Mather Way in Pendleton.

Two men in balaclavas ran up to a cashier and threatened him with the hammer, demanding that he hand over money and threatening staff with violence if they called police.

They then attempted to break into the till, repeatedly kicking it and trying to pry it open.

Failing to open the till or grab any money during the robbery, the pair then fled out the front door and into a Silver Polo, waiting nearby, on Nursery St, and drove off towards Eccles Old Road.

The first offender is a white man, wearing a black balaclava, a peaked bob-hat, Nike tracksuit bottoms, black trainers, black gloves and was carrying a black Adidas bag with a large white logo.

The second offender is also a white man, wearing a black balaclava, grey hooded jumper, grey jogging bottoms, dark white or grey trainers, black gloves and was carrying a hammer.

Detective Constable Cathy Blain said: “These men entered a busy shop in broad daylight and had no qualms about using violence to try and achieve their aims.

“They subjected the cashier to a frightening ordeal and he was in very real danger of being attacked by these men with a weapon, as they frantically attempted to gain entry to the till.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this crime to come forward, this happened on a busy precinct with shoppers everywhere, someone must have seen something.

“If you know the identity of the robbers or even just saw them that afternoon, please contact police.”
