10 people including 16-year-old boy arrested for murder of Daniel Smith in Salford


Police investigating the murder of homeless man Daniel Smith in Salford have made five more arrests.

Three men age 19, 24, and 26, a 28-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy are now being questioned on suspicion of murder.

The 23-year-old’s body was discovered in a burning tent under a railway bridge in Salford on Wednesday 20 January.

Investigators described the gruesome nature of the crime scene they discovered on Irwell Street.

Daniel suffered multiple severe injuries before his body was set alight.

Detectives thanked the public for their overwhelming response since the news broke of the shocking murder.

Two men age 21 and 25 who were arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday 24 January remain in police custody.

A 16-year-old boy arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, and a 24-year-old man arrested on Friday, have both been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick from GMP’s Major Investigation Team said: “Our investigation has moved on significantly since last week and I would like to thank the public for their response.

“We now have several people in custody who are being questioned in relation to Daniel’s death and our enquiries remain ongoing.

“We have specialist officers providing ongoing support to Daniel’s family and I would ask for anyone that has any information that could assist this police investigation to please get in touch and tell us what you know.”
