BT internet customers reported their services went offline this afternoon across Salford and Manchester.
It appears the internet outage was not confined to the telecoms giant, with Virgin Media is also reporting technical issues.
Customers started to report problems with BT broadband and phone services at around 2pm today, Tuesday 2 February.
The problem was reported by both business and private customers across Greater Manchester but broadband services went offline nationwide.
In Salford, residents reported problems with BT broadband in Monton, Swinton, Salford 6, Irlam, Walkden and Eccles.
BT’s service status was showing problems in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Stoke and London.
BT’s customer care website was also down.
Downdetector.co.uk, which monitors outages for major internet services, showed issues clustered around London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Engineers for the telecoms firm said they were working hard to repair services.
BT’s official Twitter feed @BTCare tweeted: “Sorry if you’re experiencing network problems. Engineers are on site now. We will keep you updated.”
Some customers had come back online by 5pm but large numbers of people were still reporting issues with both their phone and broadband service.
